Owner, contractor and visitor induction

Everyone must complete this before entering our hardstand area. It takes about 10 minutes, it is valid for 12 months, and you will get a signed copy by email.

About you

1. Your responsibilities

All owners, contractors, workers and others must complete this induction before entering the Port City Fabrications Pty Ltd hardstand area. Inductions are valid for 12 months. All owners, contractors and other persons shall:

  • Comply with Port City Fabrications Pty Ltd policies, procedures and instructions while carrying out work on the Port City Fabrications premises, or while performing work on behalf of Port City Fabrications Pty Ltd.
  • Produce a copy of their health and safety, quality and/or environmental policies on acceptance of the work, and identify the person responsible within their organisation for managing these activities.
  • Take immediate remedial action to rectify unsatisfactory situations.
  • Ensure safe working methods are adopted, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is used, and all proper measures are applied to avoid injury, damage and environmental harm.
  • Provide all appropriate and compliant safety protective clothing and/or equipment, and appropriate training and information, unless otherwise specifically agreed.
  • Wear, as a minimum, all PPE in accordance with this induction.
  • Follow all rules, signage and any directions given by Port City Fabrications staff.
  • Brief any of their visitors or workers on these rules, and have them inducted by Port City Fabrications before allowing them to enter the hardstand area.
  • Ensure any contractors engaged to do work have been approved and inducted by Port City Fabrications.
  • Report any breaches of these rules, incidents, injuries, substance spills or near misses to Port City Fabrications staff immediately.
  • Be responsible for any costs incurred by, or claims against, Port City Fabrications Pty Ltd that result from their activity in the Port City Fabrications yard.
  • Provide details of current public liability insurance and workers compensation insurance (if applicable) before undertaking work in the hardstand area as a contractor or owner.

3. Site rules

All owners, contractors, subcontractors, visitors and others shall comply with the following:

  • No alcohol, illegal drugs or firearms in the hardstand area. Alcohol stored on board a vessel must not be opened or consumed while the vessel is on the hardstand.
  • Owners and contractors are responsible for the behaviour of their workers and visitors.
  • Work is to be carried out during daylight hours only, unless Port City Fabrications management has given written consent.
  • Boats are not to be adjusted in cradles without permission from Port City Fabrications staff.
  • Keep work areas clean and tidy. Avoid clutter and leads across the ground that create trip hazards. All rubbish goes in the skip bins at the end of each day.
  • Hazardous waste (oils, paints, batteries and the like) must not go in regular waste bins. Ask Port City Fabrications staff for advice.
  • All electrical equipment and leads must have a current test and tag. Qualified electricians can assist if testing is required (contact Port City Fabrications staff).
  • Owners must not carry out spray painting, electrical work, welding or hot works (anything generating significant heat or sparks) without written approval from Port City Fabrications management.
  • No refuelling of boats in the hardstand area without written approval from Port City Fabrications management.
  • In a fire: raise the alarm, call 000 and evacuate. Only fight the fire if you are competent with the equipment and feel safe to do so. Any firefighting is at your own risk; if in doubt, evacuate.
  • Enclosed footwear must be worn at all times when working on a boat or moving around the hardstand area.
  • Sun protection should be considered at all times when working outside.
  • Hearing protection must be worn whenever high noise levels are present.
  • Plant, tools or equipment owned by or on hire to Port City Fabrications must not be altered or modified unless authorised in writing by Port City Fabrications management.
  • All equipment, tools and plant brought in by owners and/or contractors must be properly maintained, inspected daily and in good working order, with any guards and safety devices working and in place.
  • Stairs, if supplied, are set up by Port City Fabrications and must not be modified or moved without permission. Stairs are an access point and are not a fall protection device; using them is at the owner's or subcontractor's own responsibility and risk. Report any fault or damage to the stairs to Port City Fabrications immediately.
  • Owners and contractors are responsible for being competent to set up and use ladders, trestle ladder scaffolds and other access equipment, and must follow any directions from Port City Fabrications staff about their setup and use.   • Eye protection (safety glasses, face shields, goggles) must be worn whenever activities may present a risk to eyes.
  • Other PPE must be worn as required to control identified risks.
  • Responsibility for providing all appropriate safety protective clothing and equipment, training and information rests solely with contractors and/or owners, unless otherwise specifically agreed.
  • Materials, articles or substances with any health and safety, fire or explosion risk brought into the hardstand area must be used in line with all Queensland Workplace Health and Safety requirements, and full details must be given to Port City Fabrications management before work starts.
  • Vehicle access to the hardstand area is for loading and unloading, or while tools are being used from toolboxes in vehicles. Park in the parking areas at all other times.

4. Site risks while on vessels

These site risks apply while you are on or around vessels in the yard:

  • Working at heights.
  • Slips and falls causing injury or death.
  • Electricity.
  • Basics of scaffold set-up.
  • We recommend a safety harness or other acceptable fall protection while working at heights.
  • Machinery operates in the yard. Take care at all times.
  • Lighting is reduced at night around vessels.
  • Our opening hours are 7:00am to 3:30pm.

Declaration and signature

I understand and agree to the conditions and procedures outlined above, and have had the risks noted above explained to me. I indemnify Port City Fabrications Pty Ltd in relation to property damage, property loss and personal injury occurring while working on vessels in the hardstand area. I acknowledge that I have read, understood and agree to comply with the requirements in this induction, I understand the site risks explained to me, and I agree to follow all lawful directions issued by Port City Fabrications Pty Ltd.
